When Johnny Cash was recording the material that would eventually form the final installments of his 'American Recordings' series, he knew his time was limited. He had just lost his wife, June Carter Cash, and he was fully aware that he would soon follow. Death was calling and he was just about ready for it. But first, he had some unfinished business in the studio.
In some ways, then, you can look at the upcoming 'American VI: Ain't No Grave' as Johnny Cash closing shop. It's the final chapter in the series and, appropriately, the songs collectively form a kind of reflective look back at a life fully lived; except, perhaps, for 'Ain't No Grave.' No, this one is a look forward. "There ain't no grave," sings Cash, "gonna hold my body down."
